Trinidad and Tobago offer one of the Caribbean's richest wildlife experiences, as well as a ‘beginner’s guide to South America’, combining vibrant tropical forests, mangrove-lined wetlands, and dazzling birdlife found nowhere else in the region. We will explore this beautiful country across two islands, from the legendary Asa Wright Nature Centre, where you can relax on their verandah and take in sweeping views while hummingbirds hover within arm's reach, to the scarlet ibis colonies of Caroni Swamp and the rainforest trails of Tobago's Main Ridge Reserve.
Every day will bring opportunities to encounter colorful tanagers, motmots, trogons, manakins, and dozens of other tropical species. Along the way, we will enjoy lush scenery, warm island hospitality, and a fascinating blend of African, Indian, European, and Indigenous cultural influences (and delicious food!).
The two islands constitute one country but two distinct landscapes, with Trinidad being a piece of South America separated from Venezuela by only 7 miles. Its geology and ecology reflect this, with many species of birds that are found in mainland South America as well. Tobago by contrast is a volcanic island that is part of the Lesser Antilles, and is inhabited by Caribbean species.
As with all of my tours, we work exclusively with locally and family-owned companies and hotels, ensuring that the revenue from the trip stays within the communities we visit and helps support conservation in these regions.
